The next morning arrived in South Texas with a hint of excitement lingering in the air.
Last night in Hambone’s living room had been filled with laughter, planning, and dreams of a fall foliage adventure.
After much debate over where to go, the group finally landed on Lost Maples State Natural Area to witness the vibrant fall foliage and indulge in some good old-fashioned hiking.
As they packed their gear into Mullethead’s trusty truck, the air buzzed with anticipation.
It felt like the perfect day for an escape into nature, where the leaves would be ablaze with color.
With the campfire tales still fresh in their minds and camping gear in tow just in case, they hit the road.
“If you’re lucky enough to visit Lost Maples, a guide like the this would be very useful: Lost Maples State Natural Area: Half day hikes (or less) with trail maps, directions, photos and tips for day visitors, campers and backpackers (Texas State Parks Hiking Series).”

Hambone: “Lost Maples, here we come! I hear the maples turn a brilliant shade of red this time of year! Perfect for your Instagram feed, Millie!”
Millie: “Oh, you know it! I’m going to need a new hashtag, something like #MapleMadness!”
Upon arrival at Lost Maples, they paid the entrance fee and were immediately struck by the rich tapestry of colors painted across the landscape.
The air was crisp, and a sense of peace enveloped them. After a quick chat with the park ranger about the best trails, they decided to hike the East Trail.
Hillary: “So, how should we kick things off with our first fall foliage adventure? East Trail sounds like just the right challenge for us!”
As they started off, the trail welcomed them with a gentle incline adorned with clumps of colorful wildflowers.
Along the way, they encountered Monkey Rock, a favorite spot known for its playful rock formations.
Mullethead: “Looks like we found the best party rock in the hill country!”
Hambone: “I’ll take that as an invitation for a photo op!”
Millie: “Everyone jump in front and do your best monkey impression! We need proof for our #MapleMadness hashtag!”
Laughter rang out as the group posed amidst the rocks, feeling lighthearted and free. After capturing the moment, they continued their trek, headed toward the Grotto.

The Grotto and Scenic Overlook
As they arrived at the Grotto, the cool cave-like structure offered a brief pause from the sun’s warmth.
A nearby stream bubbled, and the sound of water gave a relaxing backdrop to their surroundings.
Hillary: “This is beautiful! If I didn’t know any better, I’d think we’d stumbled upon a hidden fairytale!”
Millie: “I’d say it’s perfect for a little snack break! Who’s got the granola bars?”
After a quick snack, they decided on a short side hike to the scenic overlook, motivated by the promise of stunning views.
The climb was a bit steeper, but they encouraged each other with friendly banter.
Hambone: “If I have to hear the word ‘slippery’ one more time from you, Mullethead, I’ll start calling you ‘Slip and Slide’!”
Once at the top, they were rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the vibrant foliage stretching out below them.
Reds, yellows, and oranges captured the essence of fall.
Millie: “Wow, this is going straight to the ‘gram!”
After soaking up the view, they continued along the East Trail until finally reaching the day-use pond. Here, they spent some time fishing for bass and catfish.
Mullethead: “Imagine catching fish while surrounded by all this beauty! I think I’ve hit the jackpot!”
As they cast their lines, they swapped funny fishing stories and reveled in their shared laughter and camaraderie, feeling grateful for the day’s events.
But another fall foliage adventure was at hand.
Off to Garner State Park
With the sun beginning to dip lower in the sky, the group wrapped up their fishing excursion and realized it was time to head to their next stop—Garner State Park.
The idea of camping with friends under the stars excited them all.
Hambone: “Garner’s not far from here. We can set up camp and enjoy a little campfire dinner tonight!”
Millie: “Hot dogs and ranch-style beans? Count me in! Sounds just like camping should be!”

Arriving at Garner State Park, the twilight glow painted the skies, and they quickly set up their tent.
The atmosphere filled with the sound of kites flying overhead, children’s laughter, and the smell of evening campfires.
Each member felt a sense of belonging to this time-honored tradition of Texas camping.
Hillary: “Garner has been a family favorite for so many generations. Can you believe it’s been attracting campers since the 1930s?”
Mullethead: “It’s Texas camping royalty! I can totally see why. Plus, the cypress trees along the river are iconic!”
As they lit a fire and began to cook hot dogs and heated up some ranch-style beans, the warmth of the flames mirrored the camaraderie they shared.
Hambone: “Who knew cooking over a fire could be this fulfilling? These hot dogs are going to be gourmet after a day like today!”
Millie: “Definitely! Also, they’re the best kind of gourmet when you can slather them with mustard and relish!”
The faint melodies of a nearby folk singer strumming an acoustic guitar drifted over as the group enjoyed their dinner under the starry Texas sky.
The park was exceptionally popular, offering a myriad of activities.
From fishing in the Frio River to kayaking, nightly dances at the pavilion, and the plethora of hiking trails through stunning landscapes peppered with oak, pecan, and cypress trees, this place promised endless fun and fall foliage adventures for all.
Night by the Fire
As night fell, the conversation around the fire warmed their spirits as much as the flames licked at the logs.
Hillary: “So what do you all think of our day so far? Lost Maples was incredible, and Garner is always a hit.”
Mullethead: “For sure! And let’s not forget the fishing! I didn’t catch a thing, but I had a blast with you guys.”
Millie: “You’re not getting out of this without at least one dramatic fish tale for Instagram later, Mullet! Something like, ‘The One That Got Away!’”
The laughter continued as they reminisced about the day, sharing stories of past camping trips, funny mishaps, and all the growing pains that came from spending vacations together over the years.
The camaraderie they shared was evident; it was their unique bond that made these journeys memorable.
As the evening wrapped up, they settled into their camping chairs, cabernet in hand, the fire crackling softly as they gazed at the stars twinkling far above.
Hambone: “We should do this more often. Nothing beats good friends, good food, and the beauty of nature.”
Millie: “Agreed! And next time, we should bring board games and a full picnic!”
Hillary: “You mean I have to pack a whole extra cooler? I’m already considering my wine stock!”
Exploring Garner State Park
With the promise of more fall foliage adventures ahead, the next day awaited them.
Garner State Park offered opportunities for everyone—in addition to fishing and hiking, guests could also enjoy nature programs, swimming in the crystal-clear Frio River, and leisurely paddling canoes.
The park was home to outstanding views and vast hills dotted with a variety of trees, fostering the perfect backdrop for enjoying fall foliage.
From the magnificent oaks that cast refreshing shade to the native pecans, each tree lent its charm to the already gorgeous landscape.
Mullethead: “We should definitely check out the Old Baldy Trail. I hear the view from the top is unbeatable.”
Millie: “But we can take our time to appreciate the scenery! Nothing like a leisurely stroll in nature, right?”
Hillary: “Make sure to wear good shoes, Mullet! Last time you nearly lost a flip-flop trying to hike!”
The next morning started with the group breaking out their breakfast of cold cereal and coffee brewed over the fire. The day promised more bushy trails to conquer and much to experience.
